Where nostalgia strips away nuance, the void it leaves is filled by desire. I makes work at the intersection of nostalgia and shame. I create spaces in which cliches are confronted and embraced; simultaneously encouraging our expectations and subverting their conclusions. If memories are constructed then our recollection of them is a process of world building. In this world the wilderness is tamed and agrarianism is industrialised. I explore the formation of my own memories through recurring icons from farms, safaris and suburban interiors. Employing a range of mediums, such as oil pastel, wood carving and painting, I construct a cultural white Afrikaner nostalgia for a place and time that never existed. The materials I use are reduced to blunt gestures which depict the world as a crude drawing. I want to address my position in the Netherlands as an exploration into how the landscape is intrinsically connected to that of South Africa. In this context I acknowledge my perpetual tourist status, both at home and away.
